Margaritifera margaritifera is considered an indicator species and the absence or presence of the freshwater pearl mussel can communicate broader messages of ecological impact over time. Morse code, a reliable binary system utilized in various scenarios to communicate distress, here represents a series of ecological datasets on the status of the threatened freshwater pearl mussel across seven rivers in the Kainuu Region of Finland. The dataset, supplied by Alleco and spanning 2003-2005, was provided through an ongoing DaTA Lab collaboration with conservation researcher Panu Oulasvirta.
